The full name of this beer is actually Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA, but I thought that might be a touch long for a post title. Either way, this beer is fabulous. I’m generally not a huge IPA fan, preferring Pale Ale or Brown Ale to the India variety, but this may be one of the top two or three beers I’ve ever had. Weighing in at a hefty 9% abv, this is not a “sit and drink a six pack” sort of beer. Perhaps that’s why it’s only sold in 4-packs.
The beer gets its name from Dogfish’s process of continuously hopping the beer for 90 minutes during brewing. This gives a great bitterness. The beer has bite, but it’s not harsh like some of the IPAs I’ve experienced, and the metallic aftertaste is muted by the malts and higher alcohol content. I could see this becoming a regular addition to my fridge, if it weren’t a $3 a bottle brew. It’s worth every penny, but I still have school loans to pay!
