After trying a few different styles of beer recently, I found myself with a case of Sam Adams Boston Lager left over from a Memorial Day party. Being a beer drinker, I wasn’t about to say no to free Sam Adams, even if lager isn’t my favorite style. In my mind Sam Adams was the brewery that started America’s infatuation with real beers brewed domestically. This was the beer that told the world that Budweiser was not the only beer that we were capable of brewing.
In the years since Jim Koch introduced this beer, Sam Adams has grown to be almost universally available. This is a very good beer when you consider that the lager style includes beers like Bud and Coors. This one pours to a much darker color than Bud does, and actually has a decent head on it. The malt really shows through here too. Unfortunately, I have to say that this beer suffers from its popularity. It is a really good beer, it just doesn’t stand out anymore because everyone has had it at least a handful of times. I’ll certainly enjoy finishing the rest of the box, but without anything to really set it apart from some of the other good beers I’ve had lately, I just can’t give this one more than three mugs.
