We went to some new friends’ house for dinner the other night. The menu included a cream of garlic soup, so I wanted something that would stand up to so much garlic flavor. I went with Allagash’s Double Ale, a 7% ABV dubbel. These poured from the bottle a pleasant copper color with a tan head. There was a pleasant smell of fresh-baked bread, and the first sip brought a chocolaty flavor. The high alcohol content was definitely noticeable, but not unpleasant.
I found a hazelnut flavor in the finish, with a good, full mouthfeel. My dining companion thought that there was an artificial flavor to the beer, almost like acrylic. I did not notice it myself, but wonder if it might have been interplay with the scallop appetizer. I’ve since had two more of these myself and thought them both very drinkable. Not sure this is among my favorite styles though…
