Another 7% ABV brew, this English Strong Ale from Geary’s Brewing in Portland was an unexpected, but very pleasant, surprise. I picked up a six pack of this at the grocery store because I’d tried all of the rest of their fairly meager Maine microbrew selection. This pours a nice dark amber with a thin off-white head. This beer has a caramel note in its scent and there are hints of fruit in it as well.
There is a good malt flavor followed by a hoppy finish. The higher alcohol content is balanced nicely by the strong bitter flavor of the hops. Living up to it’s name, this beer has a distinctly English taste. This is very similar to an extra special bitter, and it’s a good one too. I’ve not tried any of the Geary’s beers yet, but if this one is representative of their brewery, I’ll certainly be seeking out more.

You’re the second person I’ve seen talking about Geary’s recently. I haven’t seen it around Upstate NY but I’m keeping my eyes open now. Keep up the good work!

I’ve just picked up a six pack of Geary’s Autumn Ale and like that a great deal too. Haven’t had a chance to write up a formal review yet, but I’m leaning towards at 3.5 mug rating.
If you have the chance, the Maine Brewer’s Festival is November 3 in Portland. I know I’ll be there, and several of my friends from upstate New York are supposed to come out as well. It’s just over four hours from Albany. Not sure exactly where you live, but there are some great Maine brewers. Bringing home a few cases of Allagash dubbel or trippel would definitely be worth it, imo. Especially for your cellaring hobby.
