I picked up a six pack of another one of Sebago Brewing’s fine offerings the other day–their Midnight Porter. This is their fall seasonal beer, and it sure makes me glad autumn is upon us. As evidenced by some of my prior reviews, I’m a big fan of flavorful beers (not to be confused with flavored beers), and this porter fits the bill. The pour is a very dark reddish brown (”ruby-colored,” according to the Sebago website’s description), with a velvety light-brown head. There are hints of caramel and roasted coffee in the nose, and the taste is dry and easy-drinking. As with most porters, there is not much carbonation here, so it goes done quite smoothly.
From the brewer’s description, Midnight Porter
…is a luscious, deep ruby red beer with a dry, smooth body. Midnight Porter is brewed with all-American ingredients. Caramel malts give this ale body and Black patent and chocolate malts provide its rich, chocolate-like flavor and ruby hue. This beer is darker and has a more roasted flavor than the Boathouse Brown, yet it is not as full bodied, or quite as bitter, as the Lake Trout Stout. This porter is mild in both hop flavor and aroma.
This is certainly a cooler-weather sort of beer, as I’m not sure I’d enjoy sitting on a hot porch tossing these back. With some good hearty soup or chili, and maybe a wood fire, this is a great way to spend a fall day though. Porter is usually thought of as a milder or easier-drinking stout, and when you’re just not in the mood for a Guinness, this is way to go. Not sure this is the best porter I’ve ever had, but it’s quite tasty and will find its way into my glass again.
