My wife is slowly acquiring a taste for hops, but something like the Ruination is a bit over the top for her. She is, however, a big fan of fruited wheat beers, so I picked up some Sea Dog Bluepaw for her to enjoy after the day on the mountain. Another Maine brewery, Sea Dog hails from Bangor and offers an apricot wheat, along with several more traditional brews. Amber did not finish all six of these, so I decided to give one a try.
This beer pours a very light gold color with a thin head. The smell is overwhelmingly blueberry. I don’t know if I smelled anything but blueberry in the nose here, and it had me a little scared. However, the taste was much more wheat beer than blueberries. There was definitely a noticeable flavor added by the wild Maine blueberries, but it was much more subtle than the aroma. The flavor was definitely more of an American, filtered wheat than the unfiltered European-style hefe weizens I prefer. A light mouthfeel with carbonation I found a touch too high detracted from the overall experience, but this one was certainly drinkable.
