Today marks the 75th anniversary of FDR’s drinking of the first legal beer in America since that bungle of historic proportions, the Eighteenth Amendment. Eight months before the ratification of the Twenty-First Amendment officially repealed prohibition,
[t]he modification of the Volstead Act allows beer to be sold once again. The modification changed the allowed alcohol percentage of a beverage from .05 to 3.2 allowing beer to be served once again. Over 1.5 million barrels of beer was consumed during the first 24-hours after the modification of the Act.
In celebration of this anniversary, breweries across the Unites States are offering special beers and beer specials today. In Maine, Gritty McDuff’s will be offering every pint they sell for $2. Amber and I are planning on joining in the fun. If you live near any of the three Gritty’s locations, you should too! I’m sure there are other local brewers celebrating today, but unfortunately no one registered their event on the Brewer’s Association website. If you know of any other local beer celebrations, please let me know and I’ll post it here.
